| PUBLISHER’S
LETTER
Welcome to OutSmart’s first annual People
to Watch issue, a salute to newsworthy GLBT individuals
in Houston.
We began working on this issue almost six months
ago, when the OutSmart staff and a 45-member “kitchen
cabinet” started gathering information on
individuals to profile. We then narrowed the list
to 30 from the expanding pool of candidates (we’re
still receiving names!).
Some individuals, including Annise Parker, Sue
Lovell, and Mitchell Katine, are certain to make
the headlines in 2003, but all of the people we
profiled have interesting projects on the horizon.
Some work in the public arena, and many are also
involved in work that supports the community.
What these folks have in common is that they are
out, proud gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender
Houstonians. We believe that their lives are truly
role models.
We know that many other people fit this description.
If you would like to suggest a person to profile,
please let us know. We plan to make People to
Watch a yearly feature.
On January 21, OutSmart will host a reception
honoring the People to Watch 2003. The 5:30–7:30
p.m. event will take place at South Beach (810
Pacific). If you would like to join us that evening
in saluting these individuals, please respond
on our website, www.outsmartmagazine.com.
You may have recently noticed a few changes in
OutSmart. Tim Brookover has been at the helm of
our editorial department for several months. Tim
is an experienced writer and editor, having worked
over the years for several magazines in Houston.
He is also a board member and immediate past president
of the Houston GLBT Community Center and serves
on the advisory boards of the Gulf Coast Archive
& Museum of GLBT History and Community Awareness
for Transgender Support.
In February, OutSmart begins it 10th year of publication.
We particularly thank our readers for continuing
to support our advertisers who keep us publishing.
They advertise in OutSmart because they want to
put the message forth that they seek and value
the business of the GLBT community. In return,
we hope you will support them with your business
and let them know how much you appreciate them.
Happy New Year!
