QUEER TV IN THE NEW YEAR
Queer character return and Queer Duck premieres
by Blase DiStefano

queer as folk

Michael loves Brian but lives with David. Brian loves Michael but lives to have sex with everybody but Michael. Justin loves Brian but lives with Michael’s mother. Okay, it’s really more complicated than that ... and a lot less trivial.

Though not a representation of most gay people, Queer as Folk is a nice slice of queerdom, a nighttime soap opera with enough eye candy (for both men and women) to keep us coming back for more. Which is what we’re ready for. The new season begins Sunday, January 6, at 9 p.m., with repeat airings every Tuesday at 10 p.m. on Showtime.

More queer news

Queer as Folk comes out on VHS/DVD: The complete 22-episode first season hits the stores on Tuesday, January 8.

It will be presented in a 5-tape VHS set and a 6-disc special edition collectors DVD set fea-turing almost three hours of extras. Each boxed set is $119.98. We’ll see you in line.

From one queer to another

Queer Duck, which follows the outrageous adventures of a gay duck who works as a male nurse, is the first series to expose the lives of gay cartoon characters. Queer Duck and his friends–Openly Gator, Bi Polar Bear, and Oscar Wildcat–all lead openly gay lives.

Jim J. Bullock and RuPaul (both openly gay, we might add) lend their voices to this queer ’toon. Premieres online at www.SHO.com in January; after the online debut, the series will air on Showtime on Tuesdays following the 9 p.m. broadcast of the other queer-titled show Queer as Folk.

MORE SHOWTIME

Beggars and Choosers. Missed episodes of Beggars and Choosers before it was cancelled? This great show featured gay character Malcolm Laffley (Tuc Watkins, pictured), and it didn’t hurt that Alexis Arquette appeared in drag. The weekly marathon starts at 9 p.m. and runs for 4 1/2 hours every Saturday and Sunday in January on Showtime.

HBO

Oz. returns for another season to bombard us with violence, gay sex, full-frontal nudity, and occasional melodrama. Good scripts and even better actors (Chris Meloni [right], Lee Tergesen [left], Rita Moreno, to name a very few) whet our appetites for the following week’s episode. Starts Sunday, January 6, at 9 p.m. on HBO.

MORE HBO

Sex and the City. The four straight (depending on your definition of "straight") women slip comfortably into their fourth year with Sex and the City. Will Samantha (Kim Cattrall, pictured, top left) do it with another woman again? Will all that humor make us laugh? We’re sure of the latter. The award-winner starts Sunday, January 6, at 8 p.m. on HBO.

NBC

Will & Grace. Grace (Debra Messing, right) schemes to fix up the mistress (Lesley Ann Warren, left–remember her in Victor/Victoria?) of Will’s (Eric McCormack) father with a friend as a favor to Will in hopes that she will leave his old man. The scheme backfires when they get a gay friend as her date. Thursday, January 10, 8 p.m. on NBC.

TCM

Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song. Though her bisexuality is not mentioned in this documentary, it’s worth the watch. Jamie Lee Curtis narrates. It features interviews with her daughter; her sister’s son; Rosemary Clooney; and Burt Bacharach. Airs throughout January, along with many of her films. More info: www.turnerclassicmovies.com.
