Traci and Tony’s Unusual New Year’s Eve

Thursday, December 21, 2017 @ 9:00 pm - Sunday, December 31, 2017 @ 11:15 pm

You’re invited to a New Year’s Eve party for anyone who’s ever been disappointed by New Year’s Eve.

Writer/performer Traci Lavois Thiebaud and composer Anthony Barilla have teamed up with a band of seasoned musicians to create a miniature rock opera based on Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 performance at the MTV New Year’s Eve Ball. Traci and Tony’s Unusual New Year’s Eve is equal parts rock concert, theatrical happening, and New Year’s Eve Party. Seven nights only at Rec Room: dancing shoes recommended.

ABOUT THE SOURCE MATERIAL
Thirty-five years ago, Cyndi Lauper was in the middle of a tour supporting her breakout album “She’s So Unusual” when she took the stage at the Ritz in New York City for the MTV New Year’s Eve Ball. MTV was only two years old, and its veejays stumbled through awkward commercial breaks and forced banter. Guest appearances included Bette Midler and Pee-wee Herman.

Thiebaud scripted the text of Traci and Tony’s Unusual New Year’s Eve drawing directly from the transcript of this televised special, and together Barilla and Thiebaud breath new, unusual life into the characters and songs of MTV’s 1983.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Anthony Barilla has been creating music for Houston theater for nearly two decades. His past experience with rock operas includes musical direction for the world premieres of Daniel Johnston’s Speeding Motorcycle (Infernal Bridegroom Productions) and Bluefinger (Catastrophic Theatre.)

Traci Lavois Thiebaud is a multi-media artist, performer, and writer. Earlier this year she co-created Red House, an immersive theater, dance and music experience. She currently pilots a solo noise poetry act, produces creative content with Dinolion and teaches improv comedy at BETA Theater.

They will be joined this New Year’s Eve by actors Charlie Scott and Walt Zipprian, Suchu Dance’s Jennifer Wood, and band members Cathy Power, Chris Bakos, Kevin Blessington, and Erin Rodgers.
