Saving What You Can: Flood Damaged Art & Collections

Saturday, September 23, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Texas Cultural Emergency Response Alliance and Harvey Arts Recovery announced today details of a workshop for the recovery and stabilization of flood damaged art and collections.

The workshop, “Saving What You Can” will be held September 23 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at The Lora Jean Kilroy Visitor and Education Center at Bayou Bend, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 6003 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77265.

“Artists, galleries and collectors are invited to come learn about resources available to help in the mitigation and recovery of flood damaged art,” said Steve Pine, lead organizer and decorative arts conservator at the Museum of Fine Arts. “This will help us understand what type of follow up action may be needed.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring images of the damage they hope to address and ask the conservators for advice. No mold damaged art can be brought to the workshop due to safety concerns for the attendees but plans can be discussed for future assistance on a case by case basis. Funding for this workshop is made possible by a Chairman’s Emergency Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“This is another example of the community pulling together to help one another and why Harvey Arts Recovery was formed,” said Debbie McNulty, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “Steve and MFAH have been very proactive in reaching out and organizing the event. We are just beginning to identify artists who have damaged inventory, homes and studios and need help on multiple fronts and we want to reach as many artists as possible.”
