Pachamama: The Andean Mother Goddess of Earth and Time

Thursday, January 10, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$20

Archaeology Now, (the Archaeological Institute of America, Houston Society), along with the Bolivian Consul General of Houston and the Institute of Hispanic Culture, will present “Pachamama: The Andean Mother Goddess of Earth and Time” as part of its DISCOVER Lecture Series.
This lecture will explore Pachamama, the mother goddess in the indigenous belief systems of the Andes Mountains. The discussion will center on how a system belief can help create identity and how worship of this powerful goddess still survives today and binds disparate cultural groups together in the Andean Basin.
Attendees will receive an extra glimpse into Bolivian culture as part of the program. A boat constructed entirely out of reed from Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, using thousand-year-old techniques, will be on display before it docks at HMNS as a permanent exhibit. The boat named “Yunta Wiñay,”which means friends forever in Quechua language, is a gift from the Bolivian Consulate in Houston. Following the presentation, dancers in indigenous costume will perform for the audience.
