Grand Opening of Making A Mark
Saturday, September 12, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
More than 300 moving works of original art by patients at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers and their siblings will adorn the hospital’s auxiliary bridge for the 25th Annual Making A Mark Opening Exhibit Celebration. During the spring and summer, children in the waiting and infusion areas of the clinic collaborated with Houston visual artist Elaine Bradford to create individual feathers, which will be combined to form the wings of large-scale birds that Bradford will incorporate into an art instillation, “Birds of a Feather.”
Also featured will be the 30 “Purple Ribbon” pieces which will travel throughout the city beginning October 2015.
Since 2001, The Periwinkle Foundation has collaborated with the Arts in Medicine Program at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center to bring unique opportunities for self-expression, empowerment and development of coping skills to patients and their families, in concert with professional artists and writers. Periwinkle’s Arts and Creative Writing Program culminates each year in Making A Mark®, an exhibition of art and creative writing by children and teens touched by cancer and blood disorders.
As part of Making A Mark®, The Periwinkle Foundation invites a local artist to create a collaborative project with the patients during their treatment. The guest artist guides and curates the project to produce a final piece of art for display. Elaine Bradford joins a distinguished group of past guest artists, including Ann Johnson, John Palmer, Kelly Gale Amen, Bert Long and Reginald Adams.
