Community college art exhibition to open at UHCL Art Gallery

Artists currently studying studio arts in area community colleges are presenting their works in the Art Gallery at University of Houston-Clear Lake in a juried exhibition titled, “15th Houston Area Community College Student Exhibition.”
“We have 16 artists from San Jacinto Community College’s North, Central and South campuses, Brazosport College, and Lone Star College’s Montgomery and University Park campuses,” said UH-Clear Lake’s Art Gallery Director Jeff Bowen.
Bowen, who judged the submissions, said he was looking for artists whose works displayed a combination of technical ability and a unique perspective or examination of a concept. “Artists were allowed to submit up to three pieces, and in a few cases, they were able to get all three of their works accepted into the show,” Bowen said. “Those particular artists were able to express their theme or concept across all three works and demonstrate how they were connected. I’m looking for artists who are developing a certain autographic style — that is, if you looked at their work separately, you could see how they worked together.”
Three artists will be chosen as winners. “I haven’t yet decided who’s won, but the pieces on my short list are those who have explored or delved into a theme that demonstrates that autographic style,” he said.
The exhibition will include mixed-media works, but Bowen said there were no constraints on theme. “We have paintings, photographs, drawings, prints, watercolors, sculpture and ceramics in this show. It’s a chance for student artists to experiment with new forms and new themes using any media,” he said.
Most importantly, Bowen said, this exhibition is a way to highlight what is important to community college art students this year. “It’s great to see what’s being created amongst emerging artists,” he said.
“Also, this exhibition is a wonderful way to introduce UHCL to potential transfer students from community colleges. We love to have them come and visit us, meet our faculty, see our campus and encourage them to continue their education here.”
