Watching the 46th Annual Academy Awards in 1974, television viewers were stunned to see a man streak, as was a cultural phenomenon at that time, across the stage. But that legendary, often-rerun incident is but one entry in the fascinating résumé of Robert Opel, who was also a gay man and noted photographer living in San Francisco until he was murdered in 1979, the year following Harvey Milk’s assassination.
