50th Anniversary of Philles Records

The current year, amazingly, marks the 50th anniversary of Phil Spector’s groundbreaking (more like an earthquake) Philles Records, the label that gave us Spector’s legendary Wall of Sound. Legacy Recordings, presumably being controlled by Spector from his prison cell, is celebrating the occasion with four excellent new releases: Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best of the Crystals; Be My Baby: The Very Best of the Ronettes; The Sound of Love: The Very Best of Darlene Love; and Wall of Sound: The Very Best of Phil Spector, the latter including Tina Turner’s truly epic “River Deep, Mountain High.” Oh the Spector era wasn’t that long ago, but it does seem like Justin Bieber’s ancestors might have enjoyed music like this when they weren’t churning butter and chasing wooly Mammoths out of the back yard. —Jack Varsi
