The Story: “Temperamentals” was code for “homosexuals” in the early 1950’s, part
of a created language of secret words that gay men used to communicate. The
play tells the story of two men, the communist Harry Hay and Viennese refugee and
designer Rudi Gernreich, as they fall in love while building the first gay rights organization
in the pre-Stonewall United Stages.
The play has a cast of 5 males, besides the roles of Harry Hay (this role has been
cast) and Rudi Gernreich, there are 3 actors that play multiple roles, which are very
challenging for actors. Age range: for Rudi and the other 3 roles, mid-20’s to mid-
30’, with some flexibility in ages. Actors will receive some compensation.
The production will run Friday and Saturdays from March 25 through April 16. Rehearsals
will begin February 14, will need to cast the show by that date.
