‘Lights in the Heights’ recalls a simpler time
Regardless of religious affiliation or level of humbuggery, most people who have experienced the warm fuzzies inevitably brought on by Lights in the Heights agree it is a metaphor for that ever-expanding borough itself: as one of Houston’s most cherished holiday happenings, it combines the diversity and convenience of Big City life, paired with the friendliness and charm of a small-town street festival.
A calming, casual antidote for the mayhem and bustle that accompanies the holidays and all its trappings, Lights in the Heights invites participants to stroll the streets and sidewalks of the Woodland Heights area to soak up not only the elaborate decorations but also the overall spirit that permeates this time of year. Throughout the evening, residential porches become stages for carolers, musicians, and even handbell enthusiasts to amuse families and friends, cooing couples, and hoards of hipsters, young and old alike. Plus, what better excuse is there to wrap a wooly scarf around your neck, fill your thermos with the spirits of your choice, and offer the season’s greetings to some friendly neighbors?
Admittedly, parking can be a bit dicey, with the Bayland, Omar, and Norhill neighborhoods being barricaded to through traffic for the evening. For early-comers, parking is available at St. Mark’s United Methodist, the Vineyard, and Zion Lutheran churches on Pecore Street, as well as Woodland and Stude parks.
