November Events at the Houston GLBT Community Center

The Center has moved! The new Center home is the Historic Dow School (1900 Kane) in the Old Sixth Ward Historic District, located between Montrose and the Heights/West End and on the western edge of downtown. The Historic Dow School is also the home of MECA (Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts), the highly regarded arts and culture organization.

Getting to the Center: The Old Sixth Ward Historic District is located north of Memorial Drive and south of Washington Avenue. The Center is in the Dow School Lubbock Wing on the southern edge of the one-block campus, at the corner of Silver and Lubbock streets. The main entrance for the Center is on Silver Street.

The Old Sixth Ward is served by multiple Metro lines, with stops on Washington Avenue, North Memorial Way/Memorial Drive, and Houston Avenue (route info: www.ridemetro.org . The Wave jitney service (www.washingtonwave.com and the REV Eco-Shuttle (www.gorevgo.com also provide regular service along Washington. There is direct access from Interstate 10, eastbound and westbound, via the Taylor and Studemont exits. The residential neighborhood offers ample street parking.

Monday, November 1. The Center Coming Out Group meets at the Center. 7-8:30 p.m.

Monday, November 1. Project Empower meets at the Center. 7:30-9 p.m.

Tuesday, November 2. Don’t forget to vote! Check out the Houston GLBT Political Caucus website, www.thecaucus.org , for a list of Caucus-endorsed candidatess. 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Thursday, November 4. AIR-Houston holds its awards ceremony for its website-design competition, which has included the Center site, at Udipi Cafe. 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, November 4. The Center HIV Support Group meets at the Center. 6-8 p.m.

Saturday, November 6. The Center hosts First Saturday Queer Bingo at the One’s A Meal private room (812 Westheimer), with Pet Patrol as the raffle partner organization. 4 p.m.

Sunday, November 7. The Center HIV Support Group hosts a potluck barbecue lunch for the entire Center family and friends on the Historic Dow School grounds. 1:30 p.m.

Monday, November 8. Project Empower meets at the Center. 7:30-9 p.m.

Tuesday, November 9. The Center hosts the monthly Center Dinner at One’s A Meal (812 Westheimer). 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, November 11. The Center HIV Support Group meets at the Center. 6-8 p.m.

Saturday, November 13. The Center Volunteer League meets at the Center. 1-3 p.m.

Sunday, November 14. Team Houston meets at the Center. 4 p.m.

Monday, November 15. Project Empower meets at the Center. 7:30-9 p.m.

Tuesday, November 16. The Center Seniors & Friends Potluck convenes at Bethel Church UCC (1107 Shepherd). 6:30-8 p.m.

Thursday, November 18. The Center HIV Support Group hosts a Thanksgiving potluck for the entire Center family and friends. 6-8 p.m.

Thursday, November 18. The Center board of directors meets at the Center. 7 p.m.

Friday, November 19. The Lesbian Discussion Hour holds its inaugural meeting at the Center (the group will meet regularly on the fourth Friday of the month). 7 p.m.

Monday, November 22. The Center Coming Out Group meets at the Center. 7-8:30 p.m.

Monday, November 22. Project Empower meets at the Center. 7:30-9 p.m.

Thursday, November 24.  Happy Thanksgiving!
