Osito Foundation Launches International Children’s Aids Day

The Osito Foundation, a Houston-based nonprofit organization that provides teddy bears to children impacted by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses, has announced the Gainer Donnelly Desroches Children’s AIDS Day. The daylong event, presented by Lockton, Inc., convenes Feb. 12 at Rice University, according to Rod Castle, CEO and co-founder of the Osito Foundation. 

“We are very excited about this momentous occasion to increase the awareness and education surrounding the impact of HIV/AIDS on families and children,” said Castle.    

Local PBS television host Ernie Manouse emcees the event, which is set to launch the Children’s AIDS Network (CAN), a comprehensive children’s HIV/AIDS resource organization that disseminates current information to professionals providing care for impacted children and their families. 

Scheduled conference speakers include Houston Mayor Annise Parker, AIDS Foundation Houston chief executive officer Kelly McCann, and Heidi Schwarzwald, MD, director of international adoption at Texas Children’s Health Center. 

Children’s AIDS Day is open to the public with a $10 minimum donation or teddy bear for the Osito Foundation. Feb. 12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Rice University’s Hamman Hall, 6100 Main Street, entrance 21. ositofoundation.org.  – by Nancy Ford
