The Houston Transgender Unity Committee has announced March 16 as the postmark deadline for applications for the trans-positive group’s annual scholarships. Representatives of the nonprofit organization say they will award two Peggy Rudd Transgender Scholarships for $1,000 each to transgender students who are attending or will attend accredited institutions of higher learning once again at the annual Houston Transgender Unity Banquet.
Returning to Sheraton Brookhollow Hotel on May 2, the banquet is one of the premiere single-night transgender events in the nation, organizers say.
The semi-formal event’s silent auction raises additional funds not only for the scholarship program, but also to support programs of the Unity Committee, including the Brenda Thomas Memorial New Year’s Day Social in January, Unity Month in March, Pride month activities in June, and Transgender Day of Remembrance in November.
The keynote speaker for the event is transgender performance artist, Scott Turner Schofield. Additional banquet and scholarship information is available online at htuc.org. – by Nancy Ford
