Just in time for this month’s High Holy Day of Love, Cleis Press releases two volumes not only for those who have no one to curl up with on a cold winter’s night — but also for those who do. For the women comes a fine heater in Best Lesbian Romance 2009. The 21 short stories in the anthology range tell tales of sex with love, sex without love, and all points in between. The collection begins demurely enough with the sweet and somewhat innocent “Femme Fatale: 1992” by Kathie Bergquist, ending resoundingly with editor Radclyffe’s pounding “Music on the Wind.” Nestled in between are 19 lusty mini-tomes, possibly climaxing, if you will, with Jennifer Fulton’s tantalizing period piece, “Absinthe.” Cleis doesn’t ignore the men and their respective Valentines, offering the 18-story Best Gay Romance 2009 with selections from Drummer founding editor Jack Fritscher, east Texas author Thomas Kearnes, and others. No doubt, it’s very good, too… if you like that sort of thing. — Preview: Nancy Ford
